About Fire fighting systems

Fire protection systems fall into three areas:

Detection / alarm

Water supply / water suppression

Ventilation / pressurisation

Each of these acts differently during a fire and has its own role in fighting it.

Detection and alarm systems work by sensing smoke and sounding an alarm, at which point everyone in the building is required to leave immediately.

Water supply and suppression systems have several elements: a fire pump station, fire cabinet sets installed on every floor of the building, and automatic sprinklers whose glass bulbs burst at 68°C and release water.

The main element of ventilation and pressurisation systems is the smoke extraction fan, which removes smoke from the building and brings in fresh air. The same systems pressurise lifts, lobbies and enclosed stairwells.
